Most divers deciding to become professionals want to share their passion for scuba diving by teaching, and helping others to discover and enjoy the sport. The SSI Assistant Instructor Program follows on from Divemaster and is designed to equip you with the skills needed to teach and take responsibility for others. Working under the supervision of an Instructor you will gain experience in both the classroom and pool. This is the foundation on which to build to become an SSI Open Water Instructor.
At Mulberry Marine Experiences we prefer our candidates to work with us on an Internship to achieve the Assistant Instructor Certification. This allows your Assistant Instructor Trainer/Instructor Trainer to mentor and guide your development, adjusting the teaching to match your needs. Your progress will depend on your availability and commitment. We can offer the course as an intensive option and suggest that all candidates book a career development session to discuss the best option for them.
The course includes home study of the online materials, these are supplemented by online academic sessions where you learn about the role of an Assistant instructor, including how to conduct individual skills training, planning sessions, legal and safety applications, teaching academic sessions, the components of a skill briefing, demonstration, evaluation, development and debrief. You must pass the Final Exam with a passing score of 90%.
Training continues with confined water/pool sessions to develop your dive and rescue skills to Instructor standard and sessions to develop practical teaching of students. All professionals will be required to pass the Water Fitness Evaluation. Your mentor will provide you with a thorough debriefing and feedback after each session.
On completion of all elements, you will be issued with the Assistant Instructor certification. Included in the course are all academic sessions, pool time, and air fills. You will be required to have your own Total Diving System that meets standards. This will be covered before your training commences.
In addition, you will need to purchase the required physical materials (SSI Instructor package) from the centre; the Dive professional registration, and course digital kit learning fees are payable directly to SSI.
