The SSI Explorers program allows children starting at age six to experience and sample the different ways they can explore the aquatic world around them. They will gain a solid foundation in ocean conservation and have the opportunity to experience four main aquatic adventures: snorkeling, scuba diving (coming soon), freediving, and swimming like a real mermaid. In addition we hold sessions focused on water safety, comfort and confidence building. Sessions are held monthly in a heated pool, and in the summer we take the fun out on the beach - weather and conditions allowing. Each month the focus will change so you are welcome to contact us to see what the Explorers will be covering that month. The age limit varies on what we are offering so snorkel, water safety, comfort and monofin swimming for 6+, SCUBA (coming later this year) 8+ and freediving 10+.You do not need to worry about age when you boolk them in, the Mulberry Marine Experience team will check ages and ensure the session is appropriate for them. They need to be comfortable in water and able to swim 20 metres without any swimming aids. If they need help reaching this milestone reach out and we will be happy to help. Mulberry will provide all the equipment needed for the sessions, but you are welcome to bring fins, masks and snorkels are appropraite if you have them. We will emial you the sessions details ahead of time so you know what to expect. All participants are required to complete medical paperwork for their safety and some activities like SCUBA require more indepth forms. Do I need to commit to set number of sessions? No the options are modular so you can dip in and out as suits you. Each session is priced individually and we limit the maximum number of particpants to six. Where do you run the pool sessions? In a heated private pool located in the heart of Selsey How long is each session? They will have 45 minutes in water but the sessions are advertised as an hour for briefings etc. My child wants to learn to snorkel, freedive or SCUBA will these sessions help? Absolutely they will lay solid foundations for courses as they become old enough to complete training.

If you are ready to explore deeper open water environments, then the SSI Freediver Course is the key. After completion you will have the skills and knowledge to allow you to plan and safely conduct dives to depths of up to 25 metres with your buddy. Mulberry Marine Experiences offer this course as an upgrade to the Pool Freediver course. Why would you choose to do this? If you complete the first part in the colder months you can develop your skills at the club pool and open water sessions to make the depth progression in open water even more comfortable. This upgrade works by adding two sessions in Open Water to the Pool Freediver Course you have already achieved. These are held in the sea at Selsey, West Sussex and other sites along the South Coast like Chesil Beach. Working with your SSI Freediving Instructor we will progress your depth on the line and ask you to perform skills from depth. If you are interested in completing the course from start to finish not as an upgrade, please contact us to discuss options. Is there a minimum age? You need to be at least 12 years old. Junior Freedivers need to dive with a certified adult or professional until they are 15. Do I need my own equipment? Only as mask and snorkel, we will provide everything else you need. Sea Turtles are much-loved marine residents, from Disney characters to inspiring art and culture they appeal to all ages. The SSI Sea Turtle Ecology Course is designed to provide you with knowledge to deepen understanding and connection to them. You will learn how to be able to identify the common sea turtles you see on your ocean adventures and travels. Looking look into the history of their development, their role in ecosystems and threats that they face. Living for between 50 and 100 years investigate how they spend their time and the incredible efforts that go into producing the next generation of sea turtles. We will bring it home to the UK with an additional section on the sea turtles you are likely to encounter in the UK – yes they are known here! All but one species has been sighted around the coast of UK and Ireland. Who is suitable for? Anyone aged over six who has an interest in marine ecology. Do I have to get in the water? If you want to get exploring the ocean as soon as possible this is the programme for you. The SSI Basic Freediver program is a more in-depth introduction to the sport. Whether you are new to the sport, or if you already enjoy your snorkelling then this course will take it to the next level. It will provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to plan, execute and enjoy freediving with your buddy to depths of 5 metres. The Program is perfect for those wishing to learn the concepts and to be more relaxed in the water. Enjoy exploring, photography and adventure to depths of 5m on certification. Offered as one day course in the summer and split over two days in the Winter you can get started on exploring, prefer to keep a single day course then this can be agreed (additional costs may apply). You will take part in academic workshops including equipment selection, use and maintenance, and a mini breathing workshop. You will transfer these skills into the real world with a pool and then open water session to fully prepare you for exploring in comfort and safety. Our beach at Selsey Lifeboat Station offers a perfect spot for training. Part of the Selsey Bill and Hounds Marine Conservation zone there is plenty of opportunity to discover the marine life whilst mastering your skills. Is there a minimum age? Few marine species capture the imagination like whales, seals and dolphins. We love to watch them, campaign to save them and often aspire to swim with them in the wild. If you are interested in the biology, ecology and conservation of this amazing diverse group this course is perfect for you. You will learn what makes marine mammals distinct from land mammals, discover where they live, explore their physiology, and how to identify various species. You will also learn about marine mammal conservation and how you can be involved. During your workshop presentation we will take a closer look at the UK marine mammals and how you can support the work of programmes like the Sussex Dolphin project. We will cover what to do when you see them, best code of conduct around them and how you get them help when they need it. Who is suitable for? Anyone aged over six who has an interest in marine ecology. However this course is offered as a single four hour learning session. We all love time on the beach and cooling down with a dip, however water related instances for the RNLI and Coastguard are on the increase. Reports from 2023 show that 1 in 3 adults and children in the UK cannot comfortably swim just 25 metres in a pool and are nervous about the sea. These courses are designed to raise awareness around all aspects of water safety whilst having fun. Adults, children and family groups are all welcome. We will help each participant understand how to assess a beach before entering the water, including tide and current indicators, explore buoyancy, exposure, get you comfortable with your Float to Live position, look at equipment/toys that helps or hinders and more. The courses are run by SSI Swimming, Snorkelling, Freediving and SCUBA Professionals using their extensive knowledge of the sea to make sure you can enjoy a beach day in comfort and safety. They are half day courses, and we will provide you with all the equipment you need. If you have some favourite beach toys, bring them and we can work them into your course. How old do they need to be to take part? The course is suitable for anyone aged 8 and above. They need to be water confident and swim 25 metres without buoyancy aids. What equipment do they need to take part? A swimming costume, a towel and clothes for after. If they have a mask, snorkel or wet suit they are welcome to bring along, however we will supply what is needed apart from swimming costume, goggles and a towel. Can I have an adult only session? We will make an assessment and alter the activities if we believe that conditions will not be safe. In the event we have to cancel you will be offered an alternative date.

This is the first of our new micro experiences, giving you all the fun but at reduced price. The Introduction to Snorkelling is being offered exclusively to the younger water lover. It will give them the chance to experience snorkelling in the pool under the supervision and guidance of trained SSI Snorkel Professionals with over 20 years of experience. We have moved into the pool for Autumn and Winter and over the course of the session we will introduce them to equipment like fins, mask and floats. We will start by helping them kit up and make sure that they are comfortable before we head off. We will then take through the skills of working with a buddy, how to clear your mask and snorkel, how to get the best out of your fins and have some fun with rescue floats. How old do they need to be? Minimum age for participation is 6 years old Do they need to be strong swimmers? No, they need to be water confident and able to swim without aids for short distances. My child would love to come but not without me can I join in? If you think your child would be more comfortable with you in the water, please message us to discuss options. What do they need to bring? They only need swimsuit, towel and clothes for after the experience. If they have their own equipment, they can bring them along, we will check fit and suitability Is there paperwork for this experience? There is a short medical questionnaire to make sure everyone will be safe and personal information so we can issue them a certificate of participation after the event.

What is a Citizen Science? It is when the public voluntarily helps conduct scientific research. The programmes are designed by scientists and contribute to the knowledge, and well being of our natural environment. At Mulberry Marine Experiences, taking part in these programmes help us to support the Marine Environment, local charities and groups that are working on specific projects to support the waters and inhabitants around the UK. Our Citizen Science Days will show you how you can turn every beach day into a positive way to help the seas and oceans, they are your chance to make a difference. Why come along? It might be your first time and you are not sure where to start, it could be to help a project you are already supporting further, a chance to find out more about the work that we carry out and meet a group of who people want to have fun whilst helping. We offer a regular schedule across the year, with each event made up of several elements including micro beach cleans (specific sites in areas of 100ms), shark and ray egg case recording, kelp recording, intertidal species surveys, and marine interactions including how to act around seals, reporting sightings of healthy and sick animals. There are opportunities for volunteers to take part in water if you want but this optional. Snorkelling offers you a fantastic chance to get close to shy marine residents. Maybe you have snorkelled on holiday but not considered doing it in the UK or are uncertain of what you can see on the South Coast of England. Whilst it is true, the water temperature is less than the Caribbean it is often 18 degrees plus in the summer months. With a thin wet suit, you can have hours of fun! What can you see? Plenty when you know where to look! Our water is green not blue, and the marine residents are often, but not always, in muted colours. This can make them harder to spot than the flashes of yellow and blue along colourful reefs. You guide will help you get your eye in so you can find and see blennies, gobies, prawns, crabs, pipefish, anemones, sponges, wrasse, bream, bass and more. You do not need previous experience; we ask that you are comfortable in the water and able to swim. They are designed to give you the confidence to snorkel safely whilst having fun. Led by SSI Snorkel Instructors you will be taken through every step. Starting with a safety briefing and introduction we then move into the water to explore shore sites including Selsey Lifeboat Station, East Beach, Aldwick, Swanage, Chesil and Durdle Door. Your Guide will take the time to make sure you are settled and practice buddy techniques in the shallows before you head off to explore. Great fun for the family, children are welcome. They must be at least 6 and able to swim 25 metres unaided. All those under 14 must be accompanied by an adult in the water. The cost is £75 per person which includes the use of all the equipment that you need, (mask, snorkel, fins, and wet suit). If you have your own equipment, we recommend that you use it. We encourage you to bring cameras so you can capture the memories and hope you do not mind if we do. Do you wonder what Freediving feels like? Are you looking for a new way to improve your fitness? Then the SSI Try Freediving Programme is the place to start. Freediving allows you to get closer to the marine life and stay longer than snorkelling and without the weight of Scuba equipment. It does not have to be all about depth but comfort, relaxation and ocean exploration. This pool based experience will introduce to you the skills and concepts that recreational Freedivers use and let you experience the different disciplines of static and dynamic Apnea. You will start with a breathing and safety workshop with your instructor to help prepare you for the best experience in the water. Discover how to use the bi-fins to aid your movement as you glide beneath the surface, relax as you try your first static breath hold all under the guidance of your SSI Freediving Instructor in comfort and safety. Is there a minimum age? You need be at least 10 and comfortable in the water. When do you offer the session? We run them on the third Wednesday (18:20) and Saturday (08:50) of each month. Other dates may be available by agreement, please contact us with your preferences and we will see what we can do. Do I need to have worn fins and masks before? No, we will take you from the beginning it is a full introduction. I have been snorkelling for some time, do I need to do this taster before beginning a freediving a course? If you are an experienced snorkeller then you may get more from the BASIC Freediver Programme which will take you below the surface and includes ocean time. I do not have any equipment is it provided? We can provide you with all the equipment you need for this experience but highly recommend that you invest in your own mask. We offer a full fitting service and have a wide range to choose from. Fittings can be arranged prior to your experience. Can I Try this in the sea? You will see amazing marine life when you are exploring but sometimes seeing is not enough. You may want to capture the moment to show family and friends or enjoy again for yourself. If you have never used a camera in the water it is different and the SSI Photo and Video program teaches you the skills needed to freedive safely with an underwater camera set up. In addition It provides you with the in-depth knowledge and experience you need to effectively use, maintain, and store your equipment. You will learn how to approach and interact with your underwater subjects, and what the effects of light and visibility will have on your perfect shot and video. Whether you have your own camera or are using one of ours we will teach you how to prepare the camera before entering the water. During the two pool sessions we will look at your buoyancy with a camera, and awareness of your surroundings. You will practice taking pictures and video using still and moving subjects. Then in a post pool workshop we review and look at processing and editing techniques. You can add an optional open water freedive at Selsey Lifeboat Station. You instructor will take you on a dive and locate subjects for you to photograph and video. We will then review these with you post dive. Just ask for prices and dates. Is there a minimum age? You need to be at least 10 years old and have a Basic Freediver or equivalent certification. Do I need my own equipment? Only as mask and snorkel, we will provide everything else you need, including a compact and video camera for you to use. You are of course welcome to use your own if you have it. We know from experience that keen younger snorkellers can stuggle to find sessions designed for them. The Junior Snorkel Club Sessions are a way for them to have fun whilst you stay dry. All the meets are staffed by Mulberry Marine Experiences. We provide a briefing, advice and surface cover whilst they are in the water, with every member of staff fully first aid trained. Each club session runs for a maximum of two and half hours and are for those aged between 8 and 15. For younger snorkellers ask us about pool sessions and the Explorers Club. We do require that all Juniors (under 15 years of age ) are certified as SSI Snorkel Divers (or equivalent) or have a Basic Freediver certification or above. Monthly sessions will be offered at Selsey, in the sea for the summer and then pool over the winter. In addition Juniors are welcome to join the other club meet dates when we head off to over locations and you are welcome to join the fun. What is included? Surface Cover Briefing We will ensure that they have a buddy. Equipment hire is included as a benefit to those who have purchased the Unlimited Plan/ Snorkel Club Training Membership. If you prefer to book individual sessions then equipment can be hired - just include a note with your booking and we will reach out to arrange. My child does not have a Snorkel Diver or Freediver certification can they join the club sessions? These are designed for Juniors who are already certifed as we are not in the water. We can offer trianing as needed and for 2026 are offering a package to let you train as a snorkeller and join sessions at a special price. How do I know if the Unlimited Plan is the best one for me? If you think you will attend more than 3 sessions in year and do not require trianing then the Unlimited Plan will be the best option for you. I want to join the snorkel club meets when you travel further afield is there a price difference? No we charge the same amount however you are responsible for your own travel and accommodation if you need. On these meets there are often chances to have a second session for the same price!
